You want a keyboard with a metal case and a knob, and you have measured your desk. The number pad is the part you can live without, and that is the whole case for the Keychron Q3 Max. The short answer: if you type all day, keep a mouse close to your right hand and rarely enter columns of numbers, it suits you, and the Fully Assembled Knob with Gateron Jupiter Brown is the version this guide points most readers to.
Specs and US list prices below are ours, checked October 27, 2026. Owner remarks come from Reddit and are linked where quoted. We did not run our own tests for this guide.
Key takeaways
- Worth it if you type all day and your mouse needs the room. TKL layout, a knob, an aluminum case and three ways to connect.
- Typing from day one: the Q3 Max Fully Assembled Knob with Gateron Jupiter Brown. $229.99, in Carbon Black or Shell White.
- Switches and keycaps already in a drawer: the Barebone Knob. It is $209.99 and arrives without either.
- Spreadsheets every day: look at the Q5 Max or Q6 Max instead. Same build, with a number pad.
What the Q3 Max is

The Q3 Max is our tenkeyless wireless keyboard in a CNC-machined aluminum case, with a knob in the top right corner.

- Layout: 80%, ANSI, with knob.
- Connection: 2.4 GHz receiver, Bluetooth 5.1 to three devices, or a USB-C cable.
- Battery: 4000 mAh, up to 180 hours with the backlight off.
- Switches: Gateron Jupiter Red, Brown or Banana, hot-swappable, under double-shot PBT keycaps.
- Software: QMK firmware and our Launcher web app, on macOS, Windows and Linux.
One r/Keychron owner summed up a year with it in two lines: "I'm very happy with my Q3 Max. I'm using it for almost a year."
A TKL layout that gives your mouse room
Tenkeyless means the number pad is gone and everything else stays: the function row, the arrow keys and the block with Delete, Home and Page Up. The Q3 Max measures 365 x 137 mm and weighs 1770 g fully assembled.

What changes in daily use
The width is what you notice first. Set next to our full-size Q6 Max, the Q3 Max is about 8 cm narrower, a little less than the long side of a credit card. That gap is where your mouse goes, so your right arm stays closer to your body.
At about 1.8 kg the board stays where you put it. The case sits at a 5.2° angle, 19.7 mm tall at the front and 32.6 mm at the back without keycaps.
Worth it if you type and move the mouse all day and almost never type a column of numbers.
Skip it if you enter numbers every day. For a number pad, the Q5 Max keeps one in a 96% layout at 408 mm wide, and the Q6 Max is the full-size board at 446 mm. For an even shorter board, the Q1 Max is a 75% layout at 327.5 mm. We compared those three in Q1 Max vs Q5 Max vs Q6 Max.
Three ways to connect
You can pair up to three devices over Bluetooth 5.1, plug in the 2.4 GHz receiver, or use the cable. The polling rate, which is how often the keyboard reports a key press, is 1000 Hz on the receiver and cable and 90 Hz on Bluetooth.
What changes in daily use
One setup that works: a laptop on Bluetooth and a desktop on the receiver. A system toggle and a set of Mac and Windows keycaps come in the box, and the keyboard saves one layout for each system. A work Mac and a home PC keep their own keys.
Battery life is the other part. Up to 180 hours with the backlight off comes to about four and a half working weeks at eight hours a day. With RGB at the lowest brightness it is up to 100 hours.
Worth it if one keyboard has to serve a laptop, a tablet and a desktop.
Skip it if you also play fast games and want 8000 Hz. For that, look at the Q3 Ultra 8K further down.
Fully assembled, side-printed or barebone
This choice decides what arrives in the box.
- Fully Assembled Knob: switches and KSA keycaps fitted. KSA is a double-shot PBT keycap with the letters on top. $229.99.
- Fully Assembled Knob (Side-Printed Keycaps): the same board with OSA keycaps that carry the letters on the front edge. $229.99.
- Barebone Knob: case, plate, PCB and knob, without switches or keycaps. $209.99.

What changes in daily use
With side-printed keycaps the tops stay clean, and the backlight shines through the legends on the front edge. You see it most in a dim room in the evening. The assembled board ships with Mac and Windows keycaps.
Pick an assembled type if you want to type on day one. The cleaner look is Fully Assembled Knob (Side-Printed Keycaps).
Pick Barebone Knob if a set of switches and keycaps is already waiting in a drawer. It costs $20 less.
Carbon Black or Shell White
Both colors cost the same, and every type and switch comes in both. Pick the one that matches your desk.

What changes in daily use
Carbon Black blends into a dark desk mat, and with the side-printed keycaps the RGB glow is what you see. Shell White picks up the color of whatever it sits on, a green mat or a light wood desk, and shows the grey and white keycaps more clearly.
Gateron Jupiter Red, Brown or Banana
The switch is the part under each key that you feel. All three are Gateron Jupiter switches, lubed at the factory and rated for up to 80 million keystrokes. Force is in gf, grams-force, the push a key takes. The figures below are nominal, from the Gateron Jupiter switch page.
- Gateron Jupiter Red: linear, about 45 gf. Smooth from top to bottom, with a soft rebound.
- Gateron Jupiter Brown: tactile, about 55 gf. A small bump tells you the key registered.
- Gateron Jupiter Banana: tactile, about 59 gf, with an earlier and stronger bump than a regular brown switch, a two-stage spring and a shorter total travel.

What changes in daily use
The 10 gf between Red and Brown is small on paper. Red is rated for a light press with a soft rebound; Brown adds the bump and a clearer rebound. The Banana bump arrives near the top of the press, and its two-stage spring pushes the key back up firmly.
You are not locked in. Every socket is hot-swappable for almost any 3-pin or 5-pin MX-style switch, with no soldering. Our red vs brown switch guide goes deeper on the first two.
Brown is worth it if you mix typing and games and want one safe choice.
Skip Brown if you already know you like a light, smooth press. Take Red.
Every version and its list price
US list prices on keychron.com. Color and switch never change the price.
| Type | Colors | Switches | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully Assembled Knob | Carbon Black, Shell White | Gateron Jupiter Red, Brown or Banana | $229.99 |
| Fully Assembled Knob (Side-Printed Keycaps) | Carbon Black, Shell White | Gateron Jupiter Red, Brown or Banana | $229.99 |
| Barebone Knob | Carbon Black, Shell White | Barebone (no switches) | $209.99 |
The only price step is the $20 between the assembled types and Barebone. The rest comes down to taste.
Who should pick what
Each line below is one way to set up the Q3 Max.
- Writing and email all day, laptop plus desktop: Fully Assembled Knob, Gateron Jupiter Brown, either color.
- Light, quick typing, often in the evening: Fully Assembled Knob (Side-Printed Keycaps), Gateron Jupiter Red.
- You already build keyboards: Barebone Knob, then add your own switches and keycaps.
On the first day, open Launcher in Chrome, Edge or Opera with the cable plugged in. Move the keys you never use and record a macro or two. An owner on r/MechanicalKeyboards put the long run in one line: "I'm typing this on a Q3 max right now. It's been my daily for almost two years now."
Two other TKL boards with a knob are built for different priorities:
- Typing by day, fast games at night: the Keychron Q3 Ultra 8K. Same layout and knob, 8000 Hz on the receiver and cable, up to 660 hours with the backlight off.
- Games come first: the Keychron Q3 HE. You set where each key fires, from 0.2 to 3.8 mm, and Rapid Trigger resets a key as soon as you let go.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Q3 Max work with a Mac?
Yes. It ships with Mac and Windows keycaps and a system toggle, and it saves one layout for each system. It also works with Linux.
How long does the Q3 Max battery last?
Up to 180 hours with the backlight off and up to 100 hours with RGB at the lowest brightness, from a 4000 mAh battery.
Is the Q3 Max good for both typing and gaming?
Yes, for most games. The receiver and the cable report at 1000 Hz, the keys register all at once, and Gateron Jupiter Brown gives a small bump on each press without a click. If you play fast shooters and want 8000 Hz or an adjustable actuation point, the Q3 Ultra 8K and Q3 HE above are built for that.
